Monster putt gives Garrigus share of lead

Robert Garrigus sank a monster eagle putt at the last to join fellow Americans Steve Stricker and Jonathan Byrd in a tie for the lead in Saturday's third round of the Tournament of Champions.

Garrigus repeatedly punched his right fist into the air in celebration after his ball rammed into the back of the cup to give him a four-under-par 69 following a tricky day for scoring at the Kapalua Resort in Hawaii.

The feared Kona wind blew throughout the round but his 56-foot eagle putt put him level with Stricker (65) and Byrd (67) at 18-under 201 in the PGA Tour's elite season-opening event.

Thorpe back training, comeback possible

Ian Thorpe is back training in the pool and has not ruled out a return to competition in time for the London 2012 Olympics.

Dave Flaskas, manager for the 28-year-old five-time Olympic gold medalist, said on Sunday that while "it's a long way from here to London," Thorpe is enjoying swimming again and "never say never."

Flaskas said in order to be eligible for the London Games, Thorpe would have to begin drug-testing in the next six to eight weeks to make him eligible a year out from the Australian trials next February or March.

Thorpe retired in 2006 after setting 13 world records and winning 11 world championship

Gabrielle Giffords staffer Gabe Zimmerman remembered - Politico

Gabe Zimmerman, the congressional staffer who was killed in the mass shooting in Arizona on Saturday, was known as a friendly and dedicated aide who had been with Rep. Gabrielle Giffords since the earliest point in her congressional career.His job was director of community outreach — the position which led him to organize the “Congress on your Corner” event that quickly turned from a run of the mill local town hall to a national tragedy in which six people were killed — including Zimmerman — and Giffords was shot in the head.

Gabrielle Giffords, Arizona congresswoman, shot in Tucson - Los Angeles Times

Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head and critically injured Saturday morning during a meet-and-greet with constituents at a Tucson supermarket. A physician said he was optimistic she could recover from the bullet wound that penetrated "through and through."
A 9-year-old girl was among six people confirmed dead and at least 12 others were injured in the shooting, according to the Pima County Sheriff's Department. The Associated Press, quoting a U.S. marshal, said U.S. District Judge John Roll was also among the dead.
