Geraldine Doyle, 86, passed away at a hospice in Lansing, Michigan on 26 December (10) after suffering complications from arthritis. She was just 17 years old when her photograph was taken while working in a metal factory, leaning over a piece of machinery with a red and white polka-dot bandana tied over her head. The picture was then said to have been used by artist J. Howard Miller as the inspiration for a 1942 poster depicting Rosie the Riveter, the brunette heroine flexing her right arm and declaring: 'We Can Do It!' The image was commissioned to boost morale for American women taking jobs in manufacturing plants to replace male workers serving in the military. Rogge lays first stone of Rio Olympic Village
Jacques Rogge, the head of the International Olympic Committee, said on Wednesday that he saw Rio de Janeiro as well on its way to preparing to host the 2016 Olympic Games.
"I'm very happy today because I see the preparations for the Games well underway," he said as he laid a symbolic first stone at what will become the Olympic Village in the city.
The ceremony gave an official profile to works that are already underway to have the facility ready for the world's premiere sporting event.
Various VIPs attended, including sporting figures, Brazil's former Fifa president and former IOC member Joao Havelange, and Rio state governor

The 2011 Australian Open will precede the Presidents Cup event in Melbourne next November, the PGA of Australia said on Sunday.
The Open, likely to be held in Sydney, will be staged from November 10-13, with the Australian PGA Championship to follow.
The Australian PGA Championship at Coolum, Queensland, will be scheduled from November 24-27, a week after the Presidents Cup between the United States and International team members is staged at Royal Melbourne from November 17-20.

The popular TV series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar as the cheerleader-turned-vampire hunter, which started as a 1992 film starring Kristy Swanson, is being re-booted for a big screen outing and casting bosses are looking a new actress to tackle the lead.
Morris was recently rumoured to be in the running for the part of Buffy Summers, although movie chiefs denied any decisions had been made, and she's now spoken of her excitement at being considered.
The actress is even hoping if she doesn't land the lead, casting bosses will still give her the opportunity to join in anyway.

Benitez 'is still Inter coach for now'
Confusion continued to reign over the future of Inter Milan coach Rafael Benitez on Tuesday after club president Massimo Moratti played down widespread speculation that he had been sacked.
Reports said Spaniard Benitez, only at the European and Italian champions since June, was being removed because of his side's poor domestic form and his outburst over what he saw as Inter's lack of ambition following Saturday's World Club Cup win.
"At the moment the coach of Inter is still Benitez," Moratti told reporters outside his offices where he had held meetings with club officials.

Just days after confessing to committing a murder 17 years ago, rapper G.Dep said he didn't know his victim, 32-year-old John Henkel, who he shot three times after a botched robbery attempt back in 1993, had actually died.
In an interview with The New York Post, Dep, born Trevell Coleman, said the police informed him of this fact when he walked into the 25th precinct to confess on Wednesday.

The sequel to the innovative 1982 video-game fantasy flick snagged the top spot at the Friday box office. Jeff Bridges returns as a gifted programmer whose unexplained disappearance prompts his son, played by Garrett Hedlund, to venture into the computer world to search for him. The film ventured into theaters on opening day with $18 million.

The controversy began when Harris tweeted some unsavory comments about soap star Eric Braeden, who was slated to tape a cameo as character Robin Scherbatsky's father. However, Harris took offense after "The Young and the Restless" actor dropped out of the appearance.
