Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way' Video: A Pop-Culture Cheat Sheet

Gaga's latest is full of nods to fashion, film, fine art and the occasional West Texas weirdo.By James Montgomery

By now, you've had a few hours to digest Lady Gaga's brand-new "Born This Way" video, a starry, swirly, some would say gnarly clip that features plenty of astral afterbirth, a snarling man-zombie and exactly one shimmering unicorn.
So, yes, "BTW" is most definitely an eye-catching, high-concept thing — as Gaga told BBC's Radio 1, it's meant to showcase "the birth of a new race," which doesn't make it all that different from all of her videos, if you think about it.
And, much like her earlier work, "BTW" is also loaded with blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments, carefully

Harris blacked out vision to play blind in Beastly

The How I Met You Mother funnyman admits he had concerns about how best to play the part, so he decided to go all the way and actually shot his scenes while his vision was completely blacked out. He says, "Playing a blind man, I didn't know the best way to approach it right, because I can see. "I thought it would be more difficult and more convoluted to, if I was to reach for a glass in the scene, to pretend like I was reaching for the glass without actually seeing. So I went to an eye doctor and he got me lenses that were totally opaque, so I genuinely couldn't see anything while I was filming it, which was great... I couldn't see a thing." Beastly, a modern retelling of classic fairytale Beauty and the Beast, also stars Alex

Two New 'X-Men: First Class' Posters!

Stressing the fact that it's a prequel, 20th Century Fox has released a pair of new posters for X-Men First Class, its most anticipated tentpole of the summer. They depict Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Erik Lensherr (Michael Fassbender) as young men in familiar environments standing over shadowy images of the militant mutant generals they are destined to become, which both capitalizes on the past success of the franchise while telling the viewer that this is a bold new chapter in its legacy. Check out the posters for the film, which also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Bacon, January Jones, Lucas Till, Nicholas Hoult and many more, below. Source:

Will John Stamos Replace Charlie Sheen on 'Two and a Half Men'?

No. No. No. NO. NO. NONONONONONONONO. Unacceptable. Since Charlie Sheen is such a freaking basket case apparently determined to end up worse off than an alley-cat eating 10 day old tuna out of a dumpster, CBS is desperate to find some way to save their ratings bonanza of a show, Two and a Half Men, now that he's gone. Nothing's official at the this point, but E! Online is reporting that CBS CEO Les Moonves has been chatting up John Stamos as a potential replacement. This Stamos role wouldn't be Charlie's old role (because that would be the dumbest thing I've ever heard) but a new one arbitrarily plopped into the show (which is actually the dumbest thing I've ever heard). Come on, seriously? The show is not that good. I think it'd

First Clip From Tom Hanks' 'Larry Crowne'

Tom Hanks hasn't appeared on screen in a motion picture since May 2009, when he starred in Sony's Angels and Demons (his voice work on Toy Story 3 doesn't count in this case), and that's far too long. I need a healthy dose of wholesome Hanks at least once a year. That's what my doctor told me. Sadly, we only get one helping of him this year in Larry Crowne, a dramedy that he wrote with his pal Nia Vardalos and directed/produced as well (take that Clint Eastwood). It'll have to hold us over until next year, when he could star in as many as four films depending on how their production schedules play out.The film centers on a middle-aged who man reinvents himself by going back to college after losing his job. Universal Pictures will

Morrison got his big break on Letterman

Morrison made his TV debut on funnyman Letterman's show in 1999, when he was a budding actor studying at the prestigious New York University. He landed a spot as a member of a spoof boyband for one episode of the programme, which kick-started his whole career. Returning to the Late Show earlier this week (ends27Feb11), he told Letterman, "My career started right there on this stage. Back in 1999 I was an NYU college kid... My second audition was for this fake boyband that you put together called Fresh Step... So I auditioned for it and I got it." Letterman showed a clip of the star singing and dancing in the fake five piece and Morrison made sure to thank the presenter for helping him break into showbusiness. The appearance made

What we came up with... we were playing dominoes and the loser had to run from the other guy - the other guy got, like, 20 yards away and he ran from the corner of the house, touched the tree... "It started where you could kinda put on a jacket... but we were like, 'The welts aren't that bad when it's like that.' Then we reduced it to, you could just wear your shorts, and that was it." Wilson aired video footage of the two pals

10 Things You Need to Know About the 83rd Oscars

Everyone that we thought would win won.Seriously. Could this have been any more boring? Is it too much to ask that we get a surprise or two? (Like Hailee Steinfeld defying Oscar history and beating Melissa Leo for that best supporting trophy? Hey Academy, I bet Steinfeld wouldn’t have dropped the F-bomb on live television. Just sayin’.) We may be able to attribute all this predictability to the fact that this year was pretty dismal for film, but I think that’s probably just what I try to tell myself so I can sleep tonight. Except for Banksy. And hipsters everywhere refrained from crying inconsolably because that’s not cool, so instead they started preparing some art installation made of old rusty shopping carts and tapped out

The Sex And The City sequel was also a big 'winner' - the movie, which was savaged by critics, took away three awards, including worst sequel, worst ensemble cast, and worst actress - shared by all four of its leading ladies, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon. Jon Chu To Direct 'GI JOE 2'

Paramount Pictures has enlisted the creative skills of director Jon M. Chu for its high-priority sequel G.I. JOE 2, the follow up to 2009's Rise of Cobra that starred Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans, Sienna Miller, Dennis Quaid and more. The success of the filmmaker's most recent outing (Justin Bieber: Never Say Never) was supposedly the deciding factor the decision as he beat out F. The 'American Idol' Top 24, Twitterized

Contestants perform on "American Idol" on Wednesday

Unlike previous seasons, this year's crop of contenders is long on talent, short on sob stories — Chris Medina's exit made sure of that. And while it's probably too early to say this, we could be looking at the most-gifted field of singers in "Idol" history (or at least since the epochal third

Who Will Be the Next 'Bourne'?

Despite reports claiming 24 was being shelved because of script concerns, Kiefer Sutherland still says 24 will happen. The actor appeared on ABC's Good Morning America and when asked directly if there will be another movie, Sutherland gave a response that will have fans cheering. "Yes, there will be a 24 movie," he boldly stated. Later on Live With Regis and Kelly, Sutherland expanded on his answer, saying he hopes to start filming in January. "I think Tony Scott is one of the directors that has expressed great interest in doing it and he would be fantastic, so I'm very excited about that." Sutherland is currently appearing in Broadway's That Championship Season, which will give producers and screenwriters plenty of time to make good on

Minnie Driver Lands Lead in 'Hail Mary'

After fielding other offers, Minnie Driver has finally settled on a pilot. She'll be starring in CBS' Hail Mary as a single mom in the 'burbs who partners up with a bad guy -- or a "street-smart hustler" -- to solve crimes. Hmm. I don't know why she shirked that offer to play a tough, fast talking Hollywood agent for this Nancy Botwin (from Weeds) rip off, but I'm sure she's got her reasons. She does have interesting taste in projects, after all. Remember when she starred on The Riches with Eddie Izzard? It was a short trip, but it was well worth the viewing. Maybe there are just few things we don't know about this show that will blow our minds, or maybe she's playing it safe after The Riches didn't last. Don't disappoint us,

Kevin Costner Up For Role In 'Superman: The Man Of Steel'?

Kevin Costner has more or less been banished from science fiction since back-to-back flops in the 1990s with Waterworld and The Postman (both not-so-ironically guilty pleasures of mine), but he could bounce back and regain some geek cred if the rumor-of-the-day turns out to be true. Deadline first reported that the Oscar winner could be up for a role in Warner Bros. new Superman reboot The Man of Steel. No details have been disclosed, so we have literally no idea who producer Christopher Nolan and director Zack Snyder would want the actor-director to play, but the obvious has already been pointed out. He could play father to Henry Cavill's Clark Kent. The Jonathan Kent part has always attracted talented middle aged actors, from Glenn

Kiefer Sutherland Returning To TV With ‘Touch’

Hey, look! It’s your favorite CTU agent, Jack Bauer! I mean, Kiefer Sutherland! And he’s returning to television? Sweet! What kind of a kick-ass spy will he play this time? How many bad guys will he take down? He’s going to play the father of an autistic, mute son who can see into the future?!Wait, what?Yep, apparently Touch (from Heroes creator Tim Kring) goes more for a mystical tone than Sutherland's longtime Fox hit 24, in which he played the gun toting bad-ass Bauer for eight seasons. Luckily, this is just a pilot which means there is a good chance we might not ever see this show go to series. Let’s cross our fingers on this one. Source:

'I Am Number Four' Director DJ Caruso To Helm 'Preacher'?

The man behind I Am Number Four has found his next project -- well, at least, we think so.D.J. Caruso tweeted last night that he just signed on to direct the film adaptation of Preacher, which is, yes, that comic book about the Texas preacher who ventures across the country to find the supernatural evil that just decimated his hometown. But -- here's the catch. Caruso's Twitter account is not verified, so this could just be a ploy from some random fan who really, really liked Disturbia or something. Regardless, here's what it said:"My deal just closed on Preacher. Going back to the dark side and pretty fucking pumped!"This potential announcement is good news for the project, considering it's been in development for years. Back in 2008,

'Californication' Recap: The Recused

S4E7: Sometimes, Californication gives us episodes, like "The Recused," where things get a little messy. The story line gets lost with random characters in random scenes that are extremely boring. In "The Recused," to be frank, nothing happened. To me, it was a "knee-bender" episode, spoon feeding us plot twists and character development that we could have easily figured out ourselves."Oh, you're recused." -HankWe closed last week with Hank and Abby, after episodes of sexual tension, finally hooking up. Good for them! I'm a big fan of Abby and Hank as a couple. Mainly because I think Abby is the exact kind of woman Hank needs -- smart, sexy, strong, confident. Plus, they have great chemistry. But we quickly learned that this, smartly,

Murder scene axed from Knox film

The dramatisation, due to air in the U.S. on Monday night (21Feb11), has drawn harsh criticism from both girls' parents, while Knox's mother and father have threatened legal action if the film is released. Knox was sentenced to 26 years behind bars in 2009 and is currently in the process of appealing her conviction. Panetierre has previously urged the two families to watch the film for themselves, insisting the movie will not affect any ongoing court proceedings, but Lifetime bosses have now decided to axe one particularly brutal scene which sees the actress re-enact

'Gatsby' Will Get the 3D Treatment Afterall

It's the weekend of 3D movie news. First we find out when we can see Martin Scorsese's first flick in the new format and now we find that Baz Luhrmann will be taking his adaptation of The Great Gatsby into three dimensional territory. I don't know about this. The 3D format works for films that are more about action, but The Great Gatsby requires a little more finesse than I think the 3D format can allow. Also on the list of questionable decisions is the choice to film Gatsby in Australia at Fox Studios instead of on New York's Long Island where the novel is actually set. The one light in this cloud of questionable decisions is the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio is set to star and Carey Mulligan has been offered the role of Daisy.

Ashley Judd May Return To TV

Ashley Judd hasn't been on television since 1994, when she co-starred on NBC's Sisters. Apparently she's about to end her seventeen year hiatus from the small screen, as Variety reports Judd is in talks to star in ABC's Missing, about a woman who, after her son disappears in Italy, travels to Europe to search for him and employs her former CIA agent skills to do so. Behind the project is writer Greg Poirer and director Steve Schill, along with executive producers Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo. Missing could premiere as early as this summer with a 10 episode arc. Good luck to them all, as perhaps they'll be the ones who'll have no choice but to finally make the "Ashley Judd is difficult to work with" rumors less...rumored. Source:

Patrick Wilson to Play a Doctor on CBS

Because we clearly don't have enough shows about cops and doctors on television, CBS is now adding Patrick Wilson to their upcoming medical drama. In addition to adding the Broadway babe, the show includes a supernatural element. Spooky. After fielding three television offers this pick-up season, Wilson elected to star as the competitive surgeon who ends up being visited by his dead wife's ghost. This is of course life-changing and the basis of the show. Wilson's had his fare share of big screen time in addition to all his experience on Broadway, but up until this he's only ever dabbled in TV with HBO's Angels in America (and as we all know, it's not TV, it's HBO so that doesn't really count). A source tells the publication, "She came out of the elevator cursing. She was screaming at the top of her voice at the bellman: 'Do I look handicapped to you?' The bellman replied, 'No, Miss Dunaway, you do not.'

"Then she stormed up to the manager's desk and pointed at a card listing the suite numbers she had seen, and shouted, 'The bellman told me this was the handicapped room'... After being told there was no longer any room, she then ripped the card with the room numbers out of the manager's

Love 'saved' Rock from fight with Law

Rock famously poked fun at the Sherlock Holmes star during the ceremony six years ago by joking he was in "every movie" at the time, after a string of the actor's films including Alfie, The Aviator and I Heart Huckabees were released the year before (04).

The comedian then met Law following the show and feared an altercation would take place - but he credits Love with defusing the situation by scaring Law off.

Rock tells Esquire, "I was sitting with Courtney Love, and she might've saved me from a fight. I'm not going to say a**-whipping... But you never know - he's hanging out with Guy Ritchie. Those guys go at it. Those motherf**kers are in shape. So Jude Law might whip my a**, I don't know. Those guys bring out mats and

But the star only found out the truth when an English-speaking official told her she had left the airport without having her passport stamped.

She tells Britain's The One Show, "I was once arrested at Bangkok airport. It was a great worry. I was travelling on my own for a book I was writing and I went to Bangkok to Chiang Mai and when I came back they arrested me and I was taken into a room and none of

Pettyfer's chance meeting with Fry led to stardom

The Stormbreaker actor, who stars in highly-anticipated new sci-fi film I Am Number Four, admits his whole career started when he fell in love with a girl at his school, and took up media classes in a bid to catch her eye.

It was on a class field trip for his new subject which led him to a bizarre meeting with funnyman Fry, who was casting for his schoolboy TV film Tom Brown’s Schooldays - and snapped up a young Pettyfer for the lead role.

Pettyfer says, "I was at school. I had a big crush on a girl and I joined the media class because she was in it. I realised that I was two years younger than her and I wasn’t in the same class as her, and I was stuck with it. I went on this school trip, and I didn’t really care about

House star Edelstein plays abortion victim in harrowing new ad

The actress plays a 1950s woman staggering down a dark hallway in the new MoveOn commercial, which takes aim at U.S. Republican politicians, who are seeking to stamp out medical insurance coverage for abortions. The ad illustrates the dangerous conditions women historically faced around reproductive choices. Edelstein states, "Decades ago, women suffered through horrifying back alley abortions. Or, they used dangerous methods when they had no other recourse." The ad goes on to point out that the Republicans have recently launched an attack on a woman's right to choose, referring to the fact that in the last several weeks they have introduced bills which, among other things, would effectively prevent women from using their own money

NBC Pilot Adds Katharine McPhee

After literally charming the pants off Jeff Winger on an episode of Community last year, Katharine McPhee proved that she still looks good on TV. I guess that's why the former American Idol contestant has signed on for NBC's pilot, Smash, which is about the production of a big Marilyn Monroe-themed Broadway musical. Believe it or not, the idea came from Steven Spielberg (what?) and will see McPhee playing a struggling young actress who does everything she can to nab the Marilyn Monroe role. She joins Debra Messing who stars in the new show as one half of the musical duo leading the onstage charge: Julia the lyricist. I'm not going to lie, I'm not a big fan of Miss McPhee, and her performances on Community, American Idol, and in The

'The Amazing Spider-Man' Is The Web-Slinger's New Title!

Despite repeatedly denying taking any banned substances, blaming the result on a steak he claims was contaminated by the drug, it increasingly looks like stage racing's biggest talent will be banned.
