Ryan Lochte's bid for eight gold medals at the short-course swimming world championships ended on the first night, when the United States relay squad failed to even finish on the podium in the 4x100m freestyle in Dubai on Wednesday.
Lochte enjoyed a dominant win in the 200-metre freestyle, but in the 400 free relay the US fell behind after Nathan Adrian's dismal opening leg and Lochte had too much time to make up when he dived in for the anchor leg.
"It's no one's fault," Lochte said. "We did our best. Everyone had to do their own part and that's all you can ask for. Everyone gave it 100 percent."
The US stood only seventh
