Firth studied Italian to impress in-laws

The King's Speech star met Livia Giuggioli on a film set in Colombia and her Italian parents were far from happy when she informed them she was hoping to marry the father-of-one. Firth explains, "I had quite a lot to prove, really, because her parents, who are delightful people, weren't exactly overjoyed at the news that she had met someone who 'a' was an actor, 'b' was an Englishman, 'c' nine years her senior, had a child and didn't speak a word of her language. "I couldn't fix a lot of those things, but the one I could immediately get to work on was the language."
